The Right Salt Is Essential | Salt Gets A Bad Rap

We've all heard that one of the keys to healthy eating
is choosing foods lower in salt and sodium
Yet those eating a healthy diet low in refined foods and high in unprocessed whole foods including fruits, vegetables and grass fed animal products may not be getting enough salt.
But not all salts are equal.

Salt is essential not only to life, but to good health. Human blood contains 0.9% salt. Without salt, our bodies cannot perform some of it's vital functions such as regulating blood and body fluids and maintaining neurological signals. Salt deficiency can lead to muscular weakness, cramps and exhaustion.

Although salt is thought of as dehydrating, in actuality, those who exercise regularly not only need to replenish water but re-hydration involves replacing both water and salt as salt is a very important ingredient which helps regulate the water content in our bodies.  In fact, eating salt will not make you thirsty and increases the metabolism. A Russian study showed that eating more salt lowers thirst, increases metabolism, and can help you loose weight.

In 1994, A study involving astronauts revealed that sodium levels in their bodies were completely unrelated to their urine output. When the crew ate more salt, they excreted more salt; the amount of sodium in their blood remained constant, and their urine volume increased.  When consuming more salt they were drinking less water.

According to Dr.Batmanghelidj, M.D., an internationally renowned researcher and author of WaterCure; The Miracles of Water to Cure Diseases:

Salt has many vital functions other than regulating the water content in the body:

  • Salt is a strong natural antihistamine. It can be used to relieve asthma by putting it on the tongue after drinking a glass or two of water.
  • Salt is the best diuretic that exists.
  • A low salt diet worsens cardiovascular disease and actually raises the risk for early death among patients at high risk of heart disease
  • Salt is vital for extracting excess acidity from inside the cells, particularly the brain cells. If you don't want Alzheimer's disease, don't go salt-free...
  • Salt is vital for the kidneys to clear excess acidity and pass the acidity into the urine. Without sufficient salt in the body, the body will become more and more acidic.
  • Salt is essential in the treatment of emotional and affective disorders.
  • Salt is essential for preserving the serotonin and melatonin levels in the brain. When water and salt perform their natural antioxidant duties and clear the toxic waste from the body, essential amino acids will not be sacrificed as chemical antioxidants.
  • Salt is vital for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Cancer cells are killed by oxygen; they are anaerobic 'organisms'... dehydration - shortage of water and salt - suppresses the immune system and its disease-fighting cells' activity.
  • Salt is vital for maintaining muscle tone and strength. Lack of bladder control in those who suffer from involuntary leakage of urine could be a consequence of low salt intake.
  • Salt is effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats and, contrary to the misconception that it causes high blood pressure, it is actually essential for the regulation of blood pressure - in conjunction with water.
  • Salt is vital for sleep regulation.
  • Salt is a vitally needed element in the treatment of diabetics. It helps balance the sugar levels in the blood and reduces the need for (injected) insulin.
  • Salt is vital for the generation of hydroelectric energy in all of the cells of the body.
  • Salt is vital to the communication and information processing of nerve cells the entire time that the brain cells work - from the moment of conception to death.
  • Salt is essential for the absorption of food particles through the intestinal tract.
  • Salt is vital for clearing the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky phlegm, particularly in asthma, emphysema and cystic fibrosis sufferers.
  • Salt on the tongue will stop persistent dry coughs.
  • Salt is vital for clearing up catarrh and sinus congestion.
  • Salt is vital for the prevention of gout and gouty arthritis.
  • Salt is essential for the prevention of muscle cramps.
  • Osteoporosis, in a major way, is the result of salt and water shortage in the body.
  • Salt is absolutely vital to making the structure of bones firm.
  • Salt is vital for maintaining sexuality and libido.
  • Salt is vital for preventing varicose veins and spider veins on the legs and thighs.

Don't reach for that salt shaker filled with those unearthly dry white grains.

The common white table salt is a super refined white poison. Table salt is mechanically harvested and processed down to sodium and chloride. Table salt is then heat processed with temperatures reaching 1200 degrees F, changing he salt's chemical structure, which in turn adversely affects the human body. Common table salt we use for cooking has only 2 or 3 chemical elements. Natural unrefined salt contains 80 or more minerals which are vital for our bodies to be healthy.

Cardboard boxes of "sea salt" are readily available at any grocery store...The term sea salt is not very specific. It can mean any salt from the sea, whether it is industrial, refined etc. Buyer beware, all sea salts are not created equal.

According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, M.D., "As a rule of thumb, you need about 3 grams of salt - a half teaspoon - for every 10 glasses of water, or a quarter teaspoon per quart of water." (Place a few grains on your tongue after each glass of water.) Those in heart failure - or kidney failure needing dialysis - MUST consult their doctors before increasing their salt intake. Sea salt contains at least 80 mineral elements that the body needs. Some of these elements are needed in trace amounts. Unrefined sea salt is a better choice of salt than other types of salt on the market. Ordinary table salt... has been stripped of its companion elements and contains addictive elements such as aluminum cilicate to keep it powdery and porous. Aluminum is a very toxic element in our nervous system. It is implicated as one of the primary causes of Alzheimer's disease.

Unrefined artisan natural grey Sea Salt hand-harvested by ancient Celtic methods is a flavorful and healthy salt containing at least 80 vital elements for our bodies.

Le Paludier unrefined grey sea salt is cultivated from a pristine clean shore. Ecologically hand harvested using wooden tools in Guerande-Brittany France in the ancient Celtic tradition. The seawater, after passing through a series of canals, evaporates on natural clay beds where it is gently raked into piles and dried slowly in the sun. This superior salt is unlike any you have ever tasted!

Unrefined sea salt is far superior to ordinary refined table salt, which has been stripped away of minerals and trace elements and contains additives.
