About Me | PR

Hi, welcome to Colorful Canary, where you'll find all natural, easy recipes, DIY's and tips to help you live a healthier lifestyle.

Organic fanatic, wild food forager, recipe developer, food lover, organic gardener, chicken guru,
plant identification whiz, and product researcher.

Since the early 90's I've been creating healthy recipes for food, skincare and home & garden products.

Aside from my own diet challenges, I have many family and friends with different diet restrictions and I love developing recipes that can suit almost any diet type and still taste delicious!

I created this blog with the purpose of sharing my simple beauty & food recipes, organic gardening tips, and product reviews to help you in your journey to a healthier lifestyle.

Living healthy doesn't have to be expensive or complicated.

Through my blog, I share not only my knowledge but years of experience researching ingredients and healthier options for diet, lifestyle, gardening and personal care products.

I'm excited to share my many easy organic food, gardening and beauty recipes with you!
I hope my blog will inspire you to live healthier and be healthy & happy!

All natural, organic DIY's for you! (Beauty, Home & Garden).
Natural living, foodie, organic fanatic, reviews, giveaways, arts, crafts, no synthetic chemicals.
Seeking all that's good in a coal-mine world. Hence; Canary. And Newfoundlander.

A little more about us

We're a little nutty, quirky and sometimes crazy!
And we're certifiably organic :)

I became engaged in health and environmental issues at the age of 21
when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and developed MCS after an injury.

Since the 90's, I have been aggressively researching a wide range of subjects, particularly those pertaining to human health and environmental issues. I have written for local, regional and national publications and am well versed in chemicals in consumer products and the harmful effects of pesticides. I graduated from London School of Journalism with a diploma in Freelance Writing & Journalism.

Things I love
Photography, arts & crafts, animals and birds, (especially chickens), walking,
wild-crafting and berry picking,
organic gardening, seed saving, developing unique recipes,
cooking and baking great organic foods.
I have a great passion for architecture and home design
and have spent many hours studying these subjects.

I insist on certified organic, people friendly products, environmentally friendly comes second to people friendly.
I love nice things, nice homes, nice cars, pretty stuff and fantastic food.
I don't think anyone has to go all out granola to be a healthy eco-consumer.

Things I don't
Green-washing, pink-washing, consumer fads and lies, toxic pesticides,
synthetic ingredients in personal care and household products,
fabric softener (hate it!), factory farms, GMO's, ignorance and judgmental people.

Myself and my husband live in a home that we designed, drafted and contracted to be free from toxic chemicals. We plan on building another home in the future with more outdoor living space. We may consider moving out of the province but have been looking for a non existent utopia, when we find the next best thing I will then set my sights on a new destination.

----

I dream of living near a sandy beach, in an area which is pesticide-free, has clean air and water, a temperate warm climate, lots of markets and local organic food and to hopefully meet some like-minded friends to spend evenings beach combing, enjoying a cup of organic tea and good scent-free fun.

All products on my blog are safe products which I would use myself.  I carefully choose products I promote. They must be organic, natural, safe and healthy.

Why Colorful Canary?

Early coal mines did not feature ventilation systems, so miners would routinely bring canaries into the mines. Canaries are especially sensitive to toxins, which made them ideal for detecting any dangerous gas build-ups such as methane and carbon monoxide. Other animals were used occasionally, but only the canary had the ability to detect small concentrations of toxins.  Having extremely heightened sense of smell and sensitivities to chemicals, myself and others who have such sensitivities often refer to ourselves as canaries due to our ability to detect small amounts of chemicals in our environment.

Colorful is just how I feel my life is...I have so many different interests, I know who I am and live authentically; I choose to do and support the things I am passionate about and share them with others.

Who Is Zuki:
(Spruce 3 & FBR)

Zuki is my husband who has been mastering the art of building things from wood without toxic glues or chemical finishes. He also enjoys helping with the heavy garden chores, and eating the organic recipes from our kitchen. He also has a passion for Fat Biking and has many cool videos on his Newfoundland cycling excursions. I've decided to add some of his many fun projects to my blog but you can also visit his YouTube Channel for more on easy wood working projects, home DIY's & Zuki's ideas and interests.
