Teflon-free toaster oven

A few years ago, while in the process of building my chemical-free home, we had to stay in a basement apartment. Because of a situation which happened with a contractor (that's a story for another time) we ended up living in the apartment for three years. The stove did not work and the landlord was not interested in fixing it. In order to cook healthy meals while in the apartment I used a toaster oven and an electric frying pan. This is all I used for cooking just about anything imaginable for 3 whole years.

My toaster oven was a convection oven and was wonderfully fast to cook and bake everything from roast chicken to pies and muffins. It finally gave up on me in it's forth year of constant use.

Once we moved into our new home, I started using a regular oven. I noticed how much more energy it burns having to heat up such a large space. Only having to cook for two people, the time and heat it takes to cook in such a large oven seems like such a waste.

I went on a quest to find a counter top oven with .9 or more cubic feet (this can roast a large chicken), I wanted convection heat but most importantly it had to be free from toxic teflon coatings. It has been 5 years now that I have been searching for the perfect counter top oven.

While searching for safe items to add to my store I finally found my dream oven. This is definitely on my list of must have items.

Not only is this oven completely stainless steel both inside and out, without any non stick coatings, has convection and has a choice of .9 cubic feet or 1.5 cubic feet ...It also has a rotisserie and is commercial grade. I'm so excited to have found this oven.

Thank you for the info. I will slowly build my stainless kitchen as I go along. This is good news that one exists even if the price is a little high and will be well worth it in the end. I'd rather be safe than sorry. You are so lucky to have been able to build a chemical-free home. So many of us got MCS after we already bought a home or ruined our credit from toxic places. Not that it makes the illness any better but to have that opportunity makes all the difference. Thanks again for sharing!

Sometimes you can luck into a cheap no-name one without Teflon, but with the silver teflon it can be hard to tell...Some day I'll tell my whole story but luck had very little to do with it, this is actually our third home which I built while we were in dept with many nights sleeping with my dog in my old suzuki...You make your own opportunities with determination...don't give up, if you want something bad enough you will get it...the key is hard hard hard work & a willful determination!

How long have you had this oven, now...and what do you now think of it? Ive been using a toaster oven and a hotplate for seven years now, and have done it in the past for eight months, and again for two years. Sometimes I miss an oven, but most days the toaster oven does what I need. I have been considering a larger one, though, and would appreciate knowing how this one is workung out for you. :-)

This is my dream oven but I haven't had the chance to get it yet...I hope to purchase one in the next year, but that's not much help to you now. I have had experience with waring pro in the past (mixers) and their quality is great...sorry I can't help more.

Thank you for this! I love your blog! I was hoping you may have some info on this. My comment is related to the dangerous chemicals or coating ( with out PTFE/PFOA)or Teflon) that most of the toasters seem to use like I was hoping to get your direction since you seem to have the same concerns as I. You may know the answer to this with the research you have done. I am concerned about the statement that the wire racks chrome plating being carcinogenic.(see below pasted form amazon) when I went to order on Amazon in the Q&A section I saw this:

*** Q I found Waring TC0650 Toaster Oven because I wanted something w/o a non-stick coating. Does this use aluminized steel & if so isn't that also toxic?
response I got back from Waring via email:
"The TCO650 interior of the Toaster Ovens have aluminized steel.
The wire racks are steel wire with chrome plating."

chrome plating could also be carcinogenic. I do not understand why it is so hard to find a toaster oven that does not use toxic substances!****

Please let me know if you know anything about that & if you feel like this is the safest oven out there :) I would really appreciate it. My husband thinks Im a freak, but I just get worried since I have family & pets Im concerned about. THanks again

As far as I am aware, chrome does not "off-gas" any chemicals when heated, which is the main concern with teflon on the inside of the oven. Chrome is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal or plastic object and it can sometimes contain other metals such as nickel. The process of chroming is extremely toxic but the end product is generally not. I never cook food directly on the rack, use a stone or safe cooking plate on top of the rack and it should be fine....I know, it's a huge challenge to find anything that's 100% safe - That's for sure!

Hi,
I know this is an older post but I am currently on the hunt for a made in the USA stainless interior toaster oven. I just spoke with an amazingly helpful customer service rep at Waring and she told me that ALL their stainless comes from China. She actually has a son with severe asthma and needed the same kind of product. Several years ago, she found a Kitchen Aid model but now all Kitchen Aids are non-stick (with a new process that is approved to be non-toxix - sure). Has anyone recently found a model that is US made with a stainless interior?

Thanks! Sue

Thanks for doing this research. I'm creating our wedding registry, looking for a toaster oven, and had no idea they'd all started using non-stick coatings. Breville was very highly regarded albeit expensive, but the non-stick coating is a deal-breaker for me. So now I'm looking at the Waring Pro.

I wonder how long it's going to take for people to realize how dangerous some of these chemicals are...
